The DMV Celebrates 20 years of collaborative divorce

This past Saturday night, RMC joined Collaborative Divorce practitioners from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., to celebrate 20 years of helping families resolve disputes through the Collaborative process.

Many of my regular readers know that for the last 20 years, we have focused our business on working with families going through separation and divorce with mortgage-related issues. Often, the house is a family’s most valuable asset, but it also has an emotional component. In other words, decisions about who keeps the marital home are not just about money; they’re also about providing a stable place for the children during a family transition.

In 2006, I was already working with some divorcing families, so several family law attorneys encouraged me to take the Collaborative training and get involved. So I did! Once I finished the training, I understood how this process could help families resolve their differences out of court and in a more productive and respectful way. I eventually was president of our local and state Practice Group and also led a nonprofit we started to provide this process to folks of modest means. At the end of the month, I will be going to Vancouver for the International Collaborative Practice Forum, where over 20 people from the DMV will attend to continue improving our knowledge and Collaborative skills.

Last year, Patrick completed the Collaborative and Mediation training, so he is continuing the RMC tradition of leading our Practice groups. He is now on the board of the DC group!

If you know anyone going through separation or divorce, please let them know they should contact us. Even if they are unsure whether they will need a mortgage, we have many resources to share, plus information on our website and private consultations. And the best part is that it is all free!
